AI and Cybersecurity: New Tools, New Security Questions

AI and Cybersecurity: New Tools, New Security Questions

By Becky Anzalone

AI is becoming part of everyday business workflows, from drafting emails and analyzing information to automating tasks and supporting decision-making. But as organizations increase their use of AI, they also need to consider a new set of cybersecurity questions.

What information is being shared with AI? Who has access to it? And how can employees use these tools without creating unnecessary risk?

AI Can Change the Security Conversation

Traditional cybersecurity training often focuses on protecting passwords, recognizing phishing attempts, and securing devices. Those practices still matter, but AI adds another layer.

Employees may use AI tools to summarize documents, analyze data, generate content, or solve problems. If they aren't sure what information is appropriate to share, they could unintentionally expose sensitive or confidential data.

That makes AI awareness part of cybersecurity awareness.

Three Questions to Ask Before Using AI

Organizations don't need complicated rules for every possible AI scenario. Employees can start with three simple questions:
  1. What information am I putting into the tool?
Sensitive, confidential, personal, or proprietary information may require additional consideration before being entered into an AI system.
  2. Is this an approved tool?
Organizations should establish which AI tools employees may use for business purposes and provide clear guidance on appropriate use.
  3. What will I do with the output?
AI-generated information should not automatically be treated as accurate or appropriate. Employees should review results, particularly when the information will influence business decisions or be shared externally.

Security and AI Go Together

As organizations adopt more AI, cybersecurity can't be treated as a separate conversation. Employees need to understand both how to use AI productively and how to use it responsibly.

That doesn't mean every employee needs to become an AI or cybersecurity specialist. It means organizations should give employees practical guidance that reflects the tools they use and the information they handle.

At The Computer Workshop, training can help organizations build cybersecurity awareness while also developing the AI skills employees need to work effectively in an increasingly AI-enabled workplace.

The more technology changes how we work, the more important it becomes to make sure our security habits change with it.
