Prepare Your Staff For The Future With a Skills Gap Analysis

By Susie Moore

One of the most common and unfortunate effects of staff leaving our enterprise is organizational knowledge loss. All those processes that had never been written down, and so many relationships we built with our clients go up in an unintentional puff of smoke.

So what do we do? Even with the best organizational culture, people will still come and go. Therefore, one key to success is codifying current skills and knowledge as well as conducting a skill gap analysis. This analysis ensures we target the necessary skills needed to retain the current organizational capability and enhance the remaining staff. In particular, the organization should consider the impact of changing technology and how this will affect the work of the remaining employees.

Here are some steps to consider for a Skills Gap Analysis:

  • Identify knowledge and skills critical to organization success. This may involve reviewing job descriptions and performance evaluations to determine the competencies required for each role.

  • Assess current employee skills and knowledge for learning gaps. This could involve conducting surveys, interviews, or focus groups with employees to gather feedback on their current understanding of technology and other key areas.

  • Determine the impact of changing technology on the organization and its employees. This may involve reviewing industry trends, analyzing the impact of new technologies, and identifying any new skills that are required to adapt to these changes.

  • Develop a plan to address any identified gaps in knowledge and skills. This could involve developing training programs, providing access to online resources or mentorship, or partnering with external experts to provide additional support.

  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the plan over time. This may involve gathering feedback from employees, assessing changes in performance or productivity, and revising the plan as necessary.

By conducting a skills gap analysis and addressing any identified gaps, organizations can ensure that remaining employees, as well as new employees to come, are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in an ever-changing environment. This can help to maintain a positive workplace culture and promote employee engagement and retention.
