Identifying Skills Gaps Across Teams: A Practical Approach for Organizations
Identifying Skills Gaps Across Teams: A Practical Approach for Organizations
By Becky Anzalone
Every organization experiences skills gaps—it’s a natural result of evolving technology, growing teams, and changing priorities. The key isn’t eliminating gaps entirely but identifying and addressing them before they impact productivity. January is an ideal time to take a closer look at where teams may need additional support.
Look at Day-to-Day Challenges
Skills gaps often show up in subtle ways:
Processes take longer than they should
Employees rely heavily on a few “go-to” experts
Tools are underutilized or inconsistently used
Errors increase during busy periods
These issues often point to training needs that cut across departments, such as data literacy, collaboration tools, or foundational technical skills.
Prioritize High-Impact Training
Not all training needs are equal. Focus first on skills that:
Affect multiple teams
Support core business tools
Reduce rework, errors, or delays
Training in areas like
Microsoft Excel
,
Data Analytics fundamentals
, or
Business Communication
can create immediate improvements across an organization. Similarly,
Project Management
training helps teams plan more effectively and align work with broader goals.
Engage Managers in the Process
Managers often have the clearest view of where teams struggle. Including them in training discussions helps ensure learning initiatives are practical and relevant. Instead of asking, “What certifications do we need?” a more effective question is, “What tasks are slowing our teams down?”
Turn Insights into Action
Once gaps are identified, organizations need training solutions that are flexible and scalable. TCW works with organizations to deliver group training, on-demand options, and instructor-led classes that address real-world challenges. Courses in Microsoft Office, Data Analytics, and Business & Soft Skills are frequently used as building blocks for organization-wide improvement. Addressing skills gaps doesn’t require a massive overhaul—just a clear understanding of where training can make the biggest difference.
